Opposition Representation Yet to Be Finalised for Provincial Council Select Committee

Sri Lanka’s Parliament has moved to appoint a Select Committee to determine the electoral system under which long-delayed Provincial Council (PC) elections will be conducted. While the resolution to establish the committee has been approved, the composition of its membership, particularly the opposition representatives, has not yet been officially announced.

According to Parliamentary procedure, the Select Committee is expected to include members from both the government and the opposition to ensure balanced deliberation. It is widely anticipated that four Members of Parliament from opposition parties will be nominated to serve on the committee. However, as of now, no formal list naming these four opposition members has been made public.

The responsibility for announcing committee appointments rests with the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, following nominations submitted by respective party leaders. Once finalised, the names of all committee members are expected to be published through official parliamentary communications and reported by mainstream media outlets.

The Select Committee’s mandate is significant. It is tasked with resolving long-standing disagreements over the Provincial Council electoral framework, including whether to retain the mixed proportional ward system or adopt an alternative model. Its recommendations will directly influence the timeline and feasibility of holding Provincial Council elections which have been postponed for several years.

Given the political sensitivity of devolution governance and regional representation especially in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the selection of opposition members will be closely scrutinised.

Civil society groups, provincial stakeholders and the Tamil diaspora are watching developments carefully as the Committee’s outcome will shape the future of provincial governance in Sri Lanka.

Until an official announcement is made, any names circulating in public discourse remain speculative. Confirmation is expected once Parliament formally tables the committee membership.
