Mangroves Matter – Another Impactful Initiative in the North

In lieu of World Mangrove Day which fell on July 26, 2025, Clean Ocean Force (COF), in collaboration with the Faculty of Botany, University of Jaffna, organized an impactful learning experience at the Mandaitivu Mangrove Forests in the Jaffna District.

This event was designed to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves in climate resilience and biodiversity conservation.

Led by Professor E. C. Jayaseelan, Head of the Botany Department, along with Manoharan Sasikaran head of COF North, the field session empowered 94 students from American Mission Tamil Kalavan School, Araly East, alongside university students, teachers, and passionate nature enthusiasts.

The island of Mandaitivu located approximately three kilometres south of the city of Jaffna, is home to significant mangrove forests known for their diverse species composition and their role as a habitat for various organisms, including the Lepidopteran fauna.

From capturing carbon to protecting our coastlines, mangroves are a vital part of our planet’s defence system. Education and awareness are key to preserving them.

Clean Ocean Force remains committed to uniting communities from the North, South, and West of Sri Lanka, building bridges through environmental action and shared learning.
