Despite the differing interpretations offered by the United States and Iran regarding the war so far, both nations have agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Donald Trump’s ‘unbridled horse’, has supported the US decision to halt attacks against Iran. However, he has declared that this ceasefire does not include Lebanon. The implication of his announcement is that while attacks on Iran may stop, Israeli military operations within Lebanon against Iranian-backed forces like Hezbollah will continue.
When Trump launched the war against Iran six weeks ago with Israel’s assistance, he had specific objectives in mind. The current reality is that, aside from killing several Iranian leaders and thousands of civilians, and destroying the country’s military and economic infrastructure and oil resources, he has failed to achieve any of those goals.
Whether or not Trump admits to starting a war based on an incorrect assessment of Iran and the misguided instigation of the Israeli Prime Minister, he reached a point of desperation. He was struggling to find a way to extricate himself from the conflict while salvaging at least a semblance of his dignity; he had no choice but to agree to a ceasefire.
The US Defense Secretary’s claim that Iran was ‘begging’ for a ceasefire is merely a face-saving tactic—like the proverb of a man claiming no dirt got on his mustache despite falling face-first.
Despite six weeks of continuous bombing, the US and Israel have been unable to bring about regime change in Iran.
Another US goal was to force Iran to ship its stockpile of highly enriched uranium out of the country. That uranium remains in Iran’s possession.
Although Trump announced that Iran’s military infrastructure, specifically its navy and air force, had been neutralized, Iran continues to launch missile and drone attacks against Israel and pro-US neighboring Arab nations.
While Iran has withstood over four decades of US sanctions, it has now proven its capability to plunge the entire world into a major crisis within days by closing the Strait of Hormuz.
Frustrated by his inability to achieve his objectives in the Gulf, Trump’s frantic declaration that he would ‘destroy a civilization’ has exposed him as a self-declared enemy of humanity.
