Ajita was one of Sri Lanka’s best-known English-language media personalities in the 80s and 90s, as a pioneer TV producer, presenter, and interviewer at Rupavahini. She also wrote for leading magazines Explore Sri Lanka, LMD and Business Today and was a sought-after compere and media skills trainer.
In 1999, Ajita received the TOYP Award for ‘Contribution to Arts, Culture and Literature’, and in 2000 the ZONTA Award for ‘Media and Communication’.
Returning after 10 years in the US, in 2015 she wrote her first book, a biography of her father Lakshman Kadirgamar, titled ‘The Cake that was Baked at Home’. In 2024 she published ‘The First 20 Years - How Rupavahini's Founding Generation Shaped Television in Sri Lanka', an account of the ‘golden years’ of Rupavahini.
